Mentors & Coaches

Help Change the Face of STEM

DC Metro area STEM professionals who represent diverse backgrounds and experiences can make a positive impact in the lives of our members as well as change the trajectory for their academic success. Parent-Coaches, Collegiate and Professional STEM Mentors are crucial assets to our membership of future engineers, scientists, mathematicians & techies.

Reverse the Achievement Gap

Mentoring students in the STEM fields is crucial to reversing the achievement gap for African American students and others, like girls, who are under-served in STEM. Partnering with mentors’ representative of fields across the STEM professions will ensure that our students see themselves in the professions they wish to pursue; it will also open avenues to achievement for our young scientists. This encouragement will help them thrive in nearly all STEM settings - especially girls who want to study math or the sciences.

Fulfill NSBE's Mission: Get Involved!

There are many ways to get involved and mentor with our chapter to best suit everyone’s STEM experience as well as match the availability of time. Whether it’s once a month leading an engineering challenge at a chapter meeting; volunteering weekly as a co-coach for one of our math or technical teams; or volunteering with a team of math enthusiasts to work with our Hidden Figures Math Club or Banneker's Mini Mathematicians – there’s always an opportunity at DMV NSBE, Jr. to share your infectious love of science, technology, engineering and math.  We hope that after learning more about our chapter’s mission & goals, you take the next step and contact us to partner and help change the face of STEM in the DC Metro Area.

Email us at dmvnsbejr@gmail.com to learn how you can get involved.

Coach a Team

Parents & Guardians

STEM Professionals, College & Graduate Students

STEM Professionals, College & Graduate Students

Parents of team members make GREAT coaches and team parents; and guess what?  No technical experience is required!

Parents as coaches need to be able to:

  • Enable, facilitate, encourage!
  • Take heart of the specific program's core values & mission!
  • The coach or mentor is there to ask probing questions, keep the team “on task” & help them with understanding concepts such as brainstorming, teamwork, etc.

There is no “one right” answer or solution.  Teams learn through trial-and-error.   The coach or mentor is there to assist the team members but not offer direct solutions or “answers”!

The full benefit of coaching a

DMV NSBE, Jr. team occurs when kids feel a sense of accomplishment from knowing that their efforts come 100% from their own minds & hands. Empowering our children in STEM exploration is what coaching is all about.

**As a volunteer-led "FUBU" organization, parents are expected to be involved & engaged.  Whether serving as a co-coach, team parent, or on a chapter committee - actively involved parents drive the success of our organization.

STEM Professionals, College & Graduate Students

STEM Professionals, College & Graduate Students

STEM Professionals, College & Graduate Students

STEM Professionals & students majoring in STEM serve as GREAT coaches because they're able to  directly motivate young people wishing to pursue education and career opportunities in STEM.  While building self-confidence & knowledge, your STEM background helps future scientists SEE themselves in you!

All  team activity must be completely done by the team members which makes you their "STEM Angel" providing support.

  • Team members will be responsible for all work on the design, construction & programming of robots; as well as all of the research & presentation of the research project.
  • Instead of providing direct instruction on the math or technical challenges,  STEM coaches give team members a sense of accomplishment to prove that they are capable of coming up with good engineering solutions and competing within their peer group.

Scheduling

Besides seeing the excitement on the face of a student who loves STEM, one of the perks of volunteering to coach a DMV NSBE, Jr. team or mentor in one of the enrichment classes is that YOU help determine the schedule based on your availability and space at the University!

*Coaches help decide which of the above days & the times, their team meets.

Our Dynamic Mathematical Visionaries Need You!
